Having tried the "Trophy Section" which connects First CT Lake to Lake Francis, I headed for the section that connects the Second CT Lake to the First. I picked a spot about halfway and bushwhacked in via a logging trail that only went part way. I knew there was a footpath that paralleled the river and soon enough, I intersected it.
Yikes, I found myself at the top of a gorge about 200+ ft deep with thundering class 3-4 rapids below. Well, at least there was a nice trail to follow vs. bushwhacking. The rail gradually descended and the river eased up to mere riffles - by Maine standards that is. This was still rambunctious, bouldery, splashy water but with a some fishable pockets. Really tricky casting with cross currents galore.
Got some bites on foam caddis but they weren't going for the dropper nymphs I tried nor the wolley bugger I bought at the Orvis fly shop in Pittsburg. I put on a bright yellow foam caddis I had tied and bam! Landlocked salmon 11 inches. Got a couple of brookie and salmon fry as well.
Headed for the Magalloway and Diamond Swift rivers tomorrow.
