Day 3 NH Trip - Magalloway

I've read a bit and heard about the Magalloway river as holding beefy brookies so it was time to go do some serious scouting.  Driving up from Errol, Rt 16 hugs the river much like Rt 3 hugs the Androscoggin.  Magalloway is root beer brown and deep, just like the Andro. Not looking like brookie habitat to me.

Following it further I spotted a couple of trucks parked next to a trail headed into the woods where the river was a bit further from the road.  A fisherman coming out told me it was all whitewater.  Bummer.

From the map I could see that a few miles more there's a tailwater just below a dam from a large lake.  There's a parking lot with 5 trucks in it - popular place for a Wednesday morning...

Ah, nothing says "welcome" like this!

What's the fuss about?

Hmm, wading this one looks a little sketchy.

An Outward Bound van pulled up with whitewater canoes and guys with helmets etc.  There were just a few pools that were approachable but all of them were occupied.  I waited a bit and got my turn.  Took a while but a caddis hatch came on and fish began to rise.  I finally got a hit on my foam caddis and it fought like a whale.  Turned out to be a 14 inch salmon I'd foul hooked through the tail.  Got another 13 incher on an emerger and a 9 inch on a dun.  All were landlocked salmon, no trout.  I'll take it.  :)

I headed toward the Diamond Swift river but was a bit surprised that I had some soreness in my upper chest.  Felt like muscle pain but since I don't have much muscle up there I wondered if it was COVID since my older brother, who had recently had it, described symptoms along those lines.
